Choose the deliverable first
Separate presentations, recorded interviews, voiceovers and advertising assets. Each needs a different evaluation. Descript describes text-based audio and video editing; that makes it a relevant research candidate for recorded content. It is not evidence that it will produce the best result for your voice, language or recording conditions. Gamma and ElevenLabs are additional directory candidates for different content tasks, not interchangeable substitutes.
Run a repeatable editing exercise
Use a short recording you own. Ask each shortlisted editor to remove the same pause, correct a name, add captions and produce the same output format. Record preparation, generation, correction and export time separately. A fast generation step may still leave substantial manual cleanup. Save the settings and date so a colleague can repeat the comparison.
Inspect the result, not the preview
Watch the exported file on a phone and desktop. Check names, numbers, caption timing, audio continuity and any branding. For slides, edit a chart and export it to the format your client expects. A polished browser preview is not enough if the delivered file cannot be edited by the next person.
Check rights and data before uploading
Use non-confidential sample material for an initial evaluation. Read the current rules for uploaded content, commercial outputs, voice consent and account retention. Ask the provider where an unanswered requirement is documented. Treat availability of a feature separately from permission to use a particular person’s likeness or voice.
Decision rule
Choose the tool that reaches your required output with acceptable correction effort and a clear usage allowance. Calculate cost per finished item, including unused credits and your editing time. If your existing editor already completes the job reliably, require a measurable improvement before adding another subscription.
